9 Nutrition Tips to Fight Asthma

Life is all about breath. There is an old saying which says “ Life is in the breath, one who half breathes half lives.” Imagine living with an difficulty in breathing, that would be a nightmare. But, there are many people who face such difficulties in breathing for life. There are different kinds of breathing problems and one of the most prominent is Asthma. Asthma is a breathing problem which causes inflammation and narrowing of the respiratory tract, leading to difficulty in breathing. When the condition gets worse the muscles of respiratory tract tighten and also mucus is produced in heavy amounts.

Asthma is a chronic breathing problem with no cure. However, we can control it and minimize the asthma attacks with the help of medication. Only medication is not enough to treat any health ailments, we need to take care of our food habits and physical routine too.

Food habits and Nutrition that minimize the asthma attacks:

1. Eating fish:

It’s a well known fact that fish contains Omega-3 fatty acids which are very essential for the human body. These Omega-3 fatty acids also have an anti-inflammatory effect which can counter the respiratory tract inflammation.

2. Consume Moringa Oleifera:

Moringa Oleifera is highly beneficial in treating asthma due to its anti-inflammatory properties. Making Moringa Tea or Moringa Powder a part of your daily diet will take you a long way in reversal of this disorder. Research has shown that regular consumption of moringa for 3 weeks significantly improves the ability for respiration.

3. Eating fresh fruits and vegetables:

Fresh fruits and vegetables are an excellent source for antioxidants like beta carotene and vitamins like C and E. These vitamins and antioxidants also have an anti- inflammatory effect to reduce the inflammation. Carrots are rich in vitamin A and beta carotene which boost the immune system. Berries and citrus fruits are filled with vitamin C which also boosts the immune system.

4. Drinking Milk:

Milk is not only a rich source of calcium but also a rich source of magnesium too. Both calcium and magnesium have properties which can soothe the inflammation.

5. Eating Avocados:

Avocados are one of the natural superfoods we have. Avocados have a very important antioxidant named glutathione. Glutathione prevents the breathing tract stress and tissue damage in the lungs.

6. Avoid fast foods, dried fruits, wine, potatoes and instant soups:

Fast foods are not only dangerous for your weight gain and are also a foe to your lungs. The saturated and trans fats present in the fast foods are dangerous for health. Dried fruits, wine, instant soups and potatoes are rich in sulphites. Sulphites act as preservatives and trigger asthma attacks.

7. Maintaining a healthy weight:

Overweight has a lot of ill effects on health which includes asthma too. Being overweight complicates asthma and losing a little weight can improve the condition.

8. Maintaining a physical routine:

A physical routine for 30 minutes everyday can help one to fight breathing problems. Light exercises and a structured exercise schedule can help one build a healthy life and healthy weight.

9. Practicing breathing exercises:

Breathing exercises can help in relieving asthma. There are various breathing techniques available which can be practiced every day to control Asthma. Before practicing any of them please, consult the doctor to check if it is advisable.
